Why is my iPhone 3GS downloading HD videos when they cannot be played on the device? I am downloading it through the built in iTunes store on the device. I am running IOS 6.1.1 on my iPhone.

Not true... iOS 6.1.1 is an iOS/update for the iPhone 4S only
My device is running IOS 6.1, I have downloaded the movie in HD on the device, and when I try to open it, it says "Cannot Open."
Only HD videos purchased from the iTunes Store in 720p are playable on your phone. 1080p content is not.
Then how do I make it download the 720p version on my iPhone 3GS. If it defaults to the 1080p version, how do I change it.
If you purchased 1080p, see if you can download the 720p version using iTunes in the cloud.
The problem is that I am traveling at the moment and will not have access to my personal computer for about a month, I would like to have this movie on my iPhone it created a problem.

That's where I have been going, and no matter what I do, it is downloading it in HD. Just for your information, I pre-ordered this movie, and it came available today, so I am downloading it from my iPhone directly.
If the movie is only available in 1080p, you should also get the SD version.
Sorry, just noticed...you have a 3GS...you can't play HD videos at all...you need an iPhone 4 or later.

I know, I pre-ordered the HD version, but the HD version is the only one downloading to my iPhone 3GS, I have pre-ordered other movies before in HD, but when I download them to my iPhone it usually downloads the SD version.
