Overheating and Draining: The iPhone iOS 6.1.1 did NOT solve the issues of 6.1

Apple released the iOS 6.1.1 yesterday in an attempt to patch the faulty script that is causing iPhone 4S users' batteries to overheat and drain at 3X-4X the normal rate.

I have a Verizon iPhone 4S and the iOS 6.1.1 patch did NOT work. Today, I watched my battery life go from 100% (cycle charge with top off) to 10% in 6 hours. Like many of you, I use all the tips and tricks such as:

  • Fetch mail instead of push
  • No location based iAds
  • Siri not activated upon handset pickup
  • Minimal notification center alerts (only a few that I need)
  • Low brightness with auto setting

I hope Apple can fix this as soon as possible- this is causing irreparable damage to my battery in the interim until the software is coded correctly.

Yes, for corporate. I recently added a CardDAV account for Google contacts, because I deleted my "personal" exchange account (Gmail) and re-added the proper Gmail account with same login etc. This way, I can delete my Gmail app because my folders/labels are already built in. I'm not sure if the Gmail pre-configured account was an option for iOS 5 when I first bought the iPhone 4S- it was set up for me by the Verizon rep.

However, I just switched the account structure two days ago (one day before the iOS 6.1.1. release) in an attempt to improve battery life (and two reboots) AND also get the benefits of the native Gmail account e-mail structure. So, I was having the battery/overheating problem before I switched the structure (when I had two Exchange accounts, one personal/one corporate).

iOS 6 was seamless for my phone and I experienced no issues. When I converted to 6.1, the battery retained about 30% of its usual lifespan-- and overheats. 6.1.1 hasn't improved the situation.

I think I remember seeing that article...do you recommend I delete my corporate Exchange account and add it back again. That's definitely a workaround solution of which I was hoping 6.1.1 would fix the loop/sync problem.

Might give it a shot..

I'm fed up with Apple and their nonsense. 6.1.1 made things worse, now my email just hands up, especially Gmail. I have deleted and re-added the account to no avail. Even Exchange will just hang minutes trying to send or get messages. Also causing worse battery life.

You suck apple. Stop trying to make the coolest products and just make something that works, like you used to.

Since I deleted the Exchange Account, rebooted, and added it back for my company, my iPhone 4S has been working great on iOS 6.1.1. Today is a very different story: my Exchange calendar is synching correctly and not looping anymore. I induced a full cycle charge this morning and have used my phone very sparingly with 95% left as of 12:50pm including a few texts, notifications, etc.

I recommend trying this approach and using the link Deggie provided. Be sure to wifi backup your phone to iCloud (or through iTunes/local hard drive). Also, make sure you have your contacts saved to one of your Cloud accounts for restoring later when you delete and re-add the Exchange account.

I don't know if the delete/add Exchange account approach will work for everyone, but it definitely did for me.

@deggie

Does this involve Gmail Exchange accounts? Or just Microsoft Exchange accounts?

I use the exchange version for my gmail account on my iPhone 4S so I was just curious. I have actually gotten better battery life since updating to iOS 6.1 and haven't notice a difference since updating to iOS 6.1.1, but that was last night so it may be to early to tell. I did leave my phone unplugged last night and it had only drained from 100% to 90% after 7 hours sitting on my nightstand turned on but locked.

I think there is a correlation between updating Over The Air rather than through iTunes and the battery life issue. Most of the battery issue stories I have read were from people that updated OTA. I have always done my updates through iTunes and have only once had a problem with my battery, but a full cycle drain and recharge fixed it.

Thom_D, my problem came from Microsoft Exchange using it for my corporate account. Deleting and reinstalling (and reboot) fixed the problem, stemming from a calendar looping/sync issue. I also was using MS Exchange for Gmail, but there's a better solution: the Gmail iOS account (delete MS Exchange and replace with integrated Gmail iOS account). The caveat is you'll have to add a Card DAV account for your contacts. This is Google's way of sticking it to Apple, and leaving just one functionality short of full integration (like not providing Google Maps for iPads yet, etc). Card DAV is very easy and you won't notice any difference. http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2753077

Iphone 4 worked fine before iOS 6.1 after it was running hot and depleting battery fast but was intermittent i.e. not always doing it.

Changed to a company owned iPhone 4S did the iOS 6.1.1. update and still have the same problem, were using Exchange for email. I updated the Iphone 4 OTA but the Iphone 4S via my Macbook so its not an OTA problem.

Within our company half of all Iphone 4 & 4S users have the same issue the others do not, go figure?

Apple keeping quiet about these issues I think is bad service and next time I will think seriously about another make my business is more important than an iphone.
