invalid code for itunes gift cards

I try to set up the iTunes Gift Cards and iTunes Gifts and they ask me for a code. I enter a code and it tells me it's INVALID! What should the code consist of?

letters and numbers, small, caps, symbols? What? Please help. Thanks.
