Does the 85W Magsafe power charger have adequate surge protection built in or do I have to add a 3rd party device for adequate protection? Thanks for your reply.

There's no surge protection in the adaptor.
I need to ask how you know this because a similar question was answered on this forum saying that one of the Magsafe devices has built in surge protection but it was not "meant to replace a 3rd party device." Can you support your answer with factual data about the adapter or some statement from Apple about the design?
I don't mean to make you wrong. I just want to base my actions on factual knowledge rather than unsupported opinion. A wrong decision about surge protection will either waste money on something I don't need to buy or it could result in major damage to my laptop.

Since the AC adapter works on all available power sources from 120V to 240V it has a rudimentary surge protection. But if it is ZAPPED with 10,000+ volts from a Lightening strike it will send it down the wire to the MBP.
If you don't already have some type of Surge Protection devices in your home then you would not be wasting any money by buying one.
They do not have surge protection, but then again your laptop won't be damaged either. Simply put the Magsafe will fail prior to the battery, and the laptop is after those 2.
Realistically a surge protector is cheaper than a magsafe so I would suggest getting one.
They have overvoltager and overcurrent protection which is quite different from surge protection. Whoever said they have surge protection simply doesn't know what that is.
They may provide a limited protection against slight line fluctuations, but this is minimal compared to what would be required to protect it from a lightning strike running down the line. These AC adaptors don't even have the ability to provide useful isolation.
A wide voltage and frequency range does not equate to surge protection. Never use expensive electronic equipment without adequate surge protection...you are really gambling doing so.
