Q: Why hp L7590 won't scan!! ?

Support team couldn't figure this one out either - have removed, reinstalled, new drivers, checked and rechecked settings, prints on front and back of paper just refuses to scan!! Any one else in this boat?

Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Have you tried using Image Capture...?

Yes, did try that. The device shows up there, but when a few seconds pass you get a msg: "failede to open a session on the device" - frustrating.

I seem to have found a work arround if you have just a very few pages to scan...
preferences> print&scan> double click on L7500 on left side of page > choose: settings> choose: "show printer web page" > Read and follow all instructions there!!!!!!
