I deleted LOTS of contacts on my iphone which syncs with icloud but now I want to sync my ipad using the icloud and do not want to have my ipad to override the corrected contact list. How do I do that?

When you turn on contacts in iCloud in settings it will ask if you want to merge or replace the contacts from the cloud.
Just be sure to merge the contacts from iCloud with your contacts on your iPad. It should be all right. If you want to be 100% careful, I would suggest that you do a full backup of your iPhone through iTunes first, so that a copy is kept there. I'm a paranoid person, so I back up there, which backs up to my computers backup.
I do not get merge or replace. It says "The contacts you previously synced with your PC will be merged with the iCloud - Merge / Cancel. I do not think this will work.
I did a back up as I too am paranoid. I am wondering if there is a way to wipe my contacts from my iPad and then do the merge?
When I was deleting all the contacts from my iPhone I thought it was best to turn off icloud on my iPad. In hindsight I think that was incorrect.

Okay here is how I handled the problem. I connected my iPad to the PC. The I de-selected contacts from the sync. So that wiped the iPad of all contacts. Then I could via the settings of the iPad turn on the iCloud for my contacts and it got updated with my iPhone contact via iCloud.
