Cracked screen

My school gave us all an ipad 3. While at my neighbors house i went to toss my ipad onto a cousin (~1 foot drop onto a footrest with a VERY thick cousin) that my friends ipad was on. The corner of my ipad nicked his and the glass shattered from under the home button and cracked around the bottom. He didn't get the warranty the school suggested, and according to apples site the warranty doesn't cover accidents (not sure if an accident no fault of your own is covered). I've also herd that apple stores will sometimes replace it one time for free, but also that they don't do that anymore. So, for an ipad 3, if they don't choose to replace it for free, how much will it cost?
