How do I merge audio tracks?

Here's the scenario guys...

I'm starting a channel on YouTube, just a little talk to the camera kind of thing. Now, I don't want the audio from my camera to be the audio that I use in the movie, right? So, I get my mic out and record the audio (in garageband) and visual into my iPhone (to be imported into iMovie). Now, when I get them both in iMovie, I match the good audio file up with the video. Perfectly in sync...But is there a way I can actually "merge" the new file onto the visual? I want to be able to edit the video without having to adjust the GB audio file to the video every time I make a cut. Please let me know if that makes sense, I'd be happy to clarify and answer some questions. Thanks!

You can do this easily in Final Cut Pro X.

In iMovie you have to add the good audio to your video. Mute the original camera audio. Then SHARE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME. Choose Apple Intermediate Codec for the codec. This will give you a merged file.

Then you can import this new file into an Event and edit both the sound and video at the same time. Use FILE/IMPORT MOVIE to import.

Thank you for your response!

This indeed answered my question!

I have another quick one for you though. I consider myself an ameteur video editer, but I love doing it. I feel like I'm getting toward the end of iMovie and would like something more advanced. Problem is, I've heard some pretty bad things about FCPX. A lot of the reviews on the app store are terrible (though there are some good ones) so is it really worth the money? I'd be using it quite a bit as I do plenty of videos for YouTube. Thanks again!

If you are comfortable with iMovie, then FCPX is the way to go. All your iMovie Projects will now be editable in FCPX. The interface is close enough to iMovie, but has a lot more capability.
