FLV is a Flash Video file. Get Adobe Flash Player from http://www.adobe.com

VLC worked and was easy to install thanks
Adobe flash player said it installed but could not find in HD anywhere. And it did not open .flv file.
Did i forget to do something elese?
I am guessing "HD" means hard drive.
If you look in System Preferences (under the Apple logo on the menu bar), you should now see a Flash Player installer down at the bottom.
Your Flash player sort of lives as a Safari browser add-on rather than a standalone app.
Just use VLC 😉
to make VLC the default application that opens FLV files, right click the FLV file and then choose Get Info.
a tall window will appear. one of the options is Open With. then you can choose vlc from the pull down menu.
Then you choose change all.
Flash Player can be a stand alone app depending on which one you're using.
It is limited where VLC can play almost any video format you throw at it. It can also play most sound files. it's really all you need now.
