Can I install iDVD from my old OS X 10.5 install disk?

I'm running OS X 10.8.2 but need to burn a slide show from iMovie. Since Apple removed iDVD from the new machines I'm wondering if I can get it from my old OS X 10.5 install disk. If so how? If not can you recomend a 3rd party app? I'm guesing something like Roxio Toast.

Thanks!

No. Whilst it came bundled with your Mac it was not part of the OS but of iLife.

The current version of iLife 11 available from Apple does not include iDVD (or iWeb), but you can buy iLife 9 or 11 from Amazon and that does include iDVD 7.

It is worth noting that the version of iDVD 7 included with iLife 11 only includes themes from iDVD 5-7. If you want all the older themes you should buy iLife 9, which has the same version of iDVD 7 but with all the themes.

But even though you can still buy iLife 11 that includes iDVD 7 from Amazon, Apple now make it difficult to install:

Poster jhb21939 posted this in another thread:

“when I attempted to load iDVD into a new iMac. A notice came up on the screen stating that the 'Authorisation Licence' had expired on 25 March this year (2012).

I contacted the Apple support team and eventually, I was told that the Licence had been withdrawn and could no longer be used.”

In other words Apple are now so adamant that we don’t use iDVD that they have tried to make it impossible to install.

In response, Old Toad posted this solution:

“You can still use it one all of your Macs. If you get an invalid certificate message just set your Mac's clock to sometime before early 2011 and run the installer. After you're done reset the time back to the correct time.” He added this comment:

“It began after iDVD and iWeb were discontued and they were dropped from the Apple Store. All I can think of is the certificate was set to expire after a certain time period after the intitial iLife disc was released.

Hi

If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.

Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.

• iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay

• DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)

• Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)

• Burn - only free alternative I know of on internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD

Burn http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html

only You can buy from Apple is

• FinalCut Pro-X which also can burn to DVD but without any nice themes.

AppleMan1958

You can also buy Compressor from Apple for $50 US. It will also create DVD and BluRay but without the nice themes.

If you have to purchase an iLife disc remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides iDVD 5-7 themes. The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.

Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:

This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:

You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

I drug/copied iDVD 7.1.2 from my old MBP running 10.7.5 to the applications folder on my new MBP Retina running 10.8.2. iDVD launches but when I try to create a new project it says, "No Themes Installed". I control, clicked on the iDVD icon to get package content and under resources all the themes seem to be there. Preferences are greyed out so I can't direct it where to look for themes.

What gives?

Thanks!

The themes must be installed along with the application. You can try dragging the iDVD folder from either the HD/Library/Application Support folder on your old MBP to the same folder on your new MBP. Then use the iDVD/Advanced preference pane to tell iDVD where to look for the themes:

The reason the preferences are grayed out is there is no project. So you're in a catch 22. You need a theme to create a project and a project to tell iDVD where to find the themes.

Put the theme folder where I mentioned, repair disk permissions with Disk Utility and reboot. Then try iDVD again. If that doesn't work put a copy the iDVD folder in your Home/Library/Application Support folder, reboot and try again. See the note below:

NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

If all else fails see my post above.

I have a new iMac and was very dissapointed to find iDVD wasn't included. I used the files on my old MacBook Pro and drag and dropped them to my new iMac. I drug "iDVD" from my applications folder to an external hard drive. Then I drug the "iDVD support folder" from Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support to the same drive. Then I placed them both into the same corresponding files (iDVD into applications folder, and iDVD Support Folder into Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support) on my new iMac and the program is working perfectly. All themes are there and I succesfully burned a DVD.

Old Toad explained it first, just wanted to let everyone know that it works!

I did exactly what you said (dragging folder to the right place, repair disk permission, etc,) but iDVD still tells me no themes installed... I looked where I copy the iDVD folder for themes (Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support), it seems like the themes were gone. I tried to copy the folder with all themes to the right destination again and open iDVD, it tells me no theme. when I look back at the iDVD folder, the themes were gone, again.

What happened here?

I have a 15" Macbook Pro with Retina Display - latest version.

Thank s a million!!!

Try dragging the iDVD folder with the Themes subfolder into your Home/Library/Applications Support folder. Then launch iDVD, go to the iDVD Advanced preference pane and point iDVD to that folder.

Remember that your Home/Library folder may be invisible so read the following:

NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

For Mavericks, 10.9, go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
