"The item can’t be moved to the Trash because it's open."

One of my applications (which happens to be a game) can’t be moved to the Trash because it’s "open". When I right-click on the app in the dock, and click Quit, nothing happens. I have tried to do a Forceful quit, but no matter what I do - the application won't close and cannot be deleted. How do I override this?!?! It is a large file (9.22GB) and really needs to be removed to make space on my hard drive. Please help...

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Launch Activity Monitor in Utilities, select All Processes and see if you can see your application listed. Select it and click on the big red 'quit process' button at the top. Now try to delete the app.
