A week old iPhone? Make an appointment at an Apple store.
Settings > General > Accessibility > AssistiveTouch > On
This feature can be used as the Sleep/Wake button for now...
You say you bought the device a week ago, did you buy it new or used. If new hardware is covered by the warranty so take the device to the closest Apple Store and ask about a replacement.

If your phone is one week old, you have a warranty, take advantage of it.
Thanks Malignance for the reply. The assistive touch was on when this issue occured.
Thanks wjosten. By the time i could reach customer care the issue got resolved. Battery had dried out. After I recharged it was fine.
I'd still go to an Apple store. The geniuses can see exactly what happened from the log files & hopefully state it was not a hardware issue.
I'm will wjosten, I'd still take the device to the Apple Store and have it looked at.
