My MacBook Pro is currently running the 10.5.8 OS X (leopard I think). I want to upgrade the operating system to a newer version. How do I do that? What are the costs involved?

I'm not sure the best way to do an operating system upgrade. I know there is now Mountain Lion and Snow Leopard, but which should I upgrade to, and how much would it cost to do this?

Thanks
