Bluetooth remote freezing with PowerPoint on MacBook Pro while idling

I am experiencing problems with bluetooth remote controls (3 different brands) freezing up when used with MS PowerPoint on a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard (all updated). It is intermittent in nature and appears to be related to idling when giving presentations. It can freeze as quickly as within one minute to not freezing until 30-40 minutes later. This may not be a remote control issue as the arrow keys on the keyboard will not advance or backup the PowerPoint slides as well. However, when using my iMac computer without the remote, I have not observed the freezing (although, I may not have waited long enough since the nature is intermittent and variable in time).

When frozen, the mouse centered on the slide with a touchpad click awakes the computer to work properly (quick, but not ideal solution). However, when two screens are utilized (LCD projector or another monitor) via VGA connecion in "Presenter View," the touchpad click does NOT awake the computer, regardless of where the arrow is placed on screen. During this situation, the "presented slide" can be advanced by clicking the forward and backward arrows below this "subwindow" of "Presenter View," and even clicking on the image itself will advance it forward (but not backward). When this happens, the keyboard arrows do not work in advancing or backing up the slide sequence.

When in this frozen mode with a LCD or 2nd monitor, the only way I have found to get it working again, is to "Exit Show" and pulling down the "Slide Show" tab and selecting "Play from Current Slide." This takes me back to the slide where the computer froze and allows the bluetooth remote to start working again (obviously not an optimal solution, as the software should not disengage). Again, it appears if I keep changing to another slide within a few seconds to a few minutes, the PowerPoint does not freeze up. However, it is intermittent and variable as to the length of time before it freezes up.

NOTE: I have run these same PowerPoints, with the same remote controls, without any problem for hundreds of hours over the past 3 years. I have updated MS Office 2011, from 2008, last fall and have also run these same items without problems for about 40 hours. I have run Mac "Disk Utility" and just installed a MS Office "Update" released yesterday, which has not corrected the issue as well. Is this issue a MicroSoft problem?

Bless whoever who has an answer to this complex situation. Thank you!

I don't think it is a Bluetooth problem, because I have tried 3 different ones (2 different brands, 3 different models). I think it is a MS Office 2011 issue. Have now tried to induce this on both of my sons' MacBook Pros running the same OS updated Snow Leopard and same version of PP Mac 2011. I cannot get them to freeze. They also have not updated their PP programs for the past few updates. Will try tonight and/or tomorrow and have them update MS PP 2011 and see if we can induce freezing. Will let you know what happens. May need to address this problem on MS Support, because I think they are the problem. Updating your OS to X Mountain Lion may fix the issue, because MS probably designed the last MS Office update around the version and didn't see the issue would happen on Snow Leopard. Please let me know any observations that you might see as problematic too. Hopefully, we will get it resolved.

You may be right. For the record, I am using Mountain Lion OS 10.8.2. I started having the problem a week or two ago with Office 2008, upgraded to office 2011, but the problem persisted. I have a Macbook Pro. To my knowledge, there were no changes or upgrades from the days of working fine to the time the problem started. Keynote appears to be fine, but I will test further. It does appear to be a Microsoft issue. Let's keep in touch and work on this one, because it is a major problem. Thanks.

That is very interesting! We both experienced this at the same time and you were using Office 2008 while I was using 2011. How does that make sense??? Thanks for telling me that you have Mountain Lion OS 10.8.2... it would appear that won't change anything if I upgrade. I have not been able to work on issue very much the past few days, but plan to exam the MS website for any discussion or support tomorrow. May also use son's laptop with MS Office update and see if we can get it to freeze with PowerPoint.

Also, last night I was going through a PowerPoint last night and was not using BlueTooth remote, just the arrow keys, and I got my iMac to freeze after about 5-10 minutes! Clicked the screen and it engaged immediately and keys then worked again. That seems to eliminates the BlueTooth issue.

Will keep you posted and please let me know if you find out anything new.

I am having the same problem with a minister's MacBook Pro at my church. It started about 2-3 weeks ago. We at first thought it was a remote issue and found out that it is not. He is running a vitually new MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion 10.8.2 OS. He has Microsoft Office 2011. He has only had the computer since December. He runs powerpoint presentations all the time. He never had a problem until about 2 1/2 weeks ago. When he runs powerpoint in Presenter Veiw it would freeze up on him. You can still move the cursor over to the arrows on the presenter view slide windo and phisically click the mouse on the arrows to move forward or backward but none of keys on the keyboard work at all. It won't even let you escape. You have to move the cursor over the "Exit Show" button and click there. We thought that it might be just a presenter veiw issue so we tried running it in "Mirror Mode" and that seemed to work for a while but now we are having the same freezing problems.

We have taken the laptop to the Genius Bar and talked to the guys there and they did not tell us anything that helped us. They found this thread that you all started with our same problem. It looks like all of us had it happen at the same time. I find that very interesting. My minister said that he had not run any updates so we don't think that was the issue.

I have tried uninstalling Office completely and reinstalling it with all the updates and that did not help. I was thinking that I have a copy of Office 2008 here in the office and I was going to uninstall 2011 and install 2008 but one of you said you were having the same issue with 2008. Maybe I can uninstall 2011 and reinstall it without doing any updates and see if that does anything. We are very baffled and can't seem to get an answer about any of this from Mac or Microsoft. All we get is one blaming the other.

Let us know if this is helpfull or if you have any luck.

Here is my summary. I first noticed the problem on February 7, 2013 and it appears that others started experiencing this issue at about the same time. Reports indicate that it does not matter whether you are using OS 10.6.8 or 10.8.2. It also does not matter if you are using MS Office 2008 or 2011.

So where's the variable? I seem to remember that in early February there was a minor Apple OS update that affected digital cameras or some such. Perhaps this software update is to blame?

I can understand on one level why Apple thinks this is a MS problem, but several people have reported the problem under both Office 2008 and Office 2011, and 2008 had been working fine for years until the problem suddently appeared. I am thinking it is an Apple issue, but the genius folks don't seem to have a clue--at least not yet.

Hello Apple: Can you duplicate the problem and help us? Thanks for tuning in and trying to solve this one.

I would be curious to here from guitarzanmartin on this again. I am currently running a different laptop with Snow Leopard on it with Office 2008 with a powerpoint to see if I can replicate the freeze. I have been running it now for over 45 min with nothing going wrong yet. It is an old MacBook Pro but has Snow Leopard. This thread is the only one I have found with us having this problem. I wish someone from Apple would jump on here and tell us they are at least looking at the problem.

I have now been running a powerpoint presentaion on an older MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard software and Office 2008 for over 2 hours with no problems. Been forward and backward through almost 400 slides. I have left it alone for large periods of time and came back to it with no problems at all. I have also gone very fast through the presentation and not had an issue.

I hope this helps someone figure out the problem.

I also cannot replicate the problem today. I am using Office 2011 and Mountain Lion. However, today I only have my MacBook Pro. Yesterday, when the problem occured, the computer was connected to an external monitor. Later today, I will test with an LCD projector. I have no idea if this will make a difference, but it might. I will post results. Thanks.
