Dell U2713H & U2713HM not compatible with iMac...

Hi,

Recently received the iMac 27" late 2012.

Wanted to run it with a U2713HM which I later returned for a different reason and upgraded to U2713H. Both monitors are somehow not compatible with the iMac, or also my Macbook for that matter.

Issue:

- red "fringing" /lines on high contrast image areas.

- heavy ghosting

- even heavier & green/magenta ghosting when calibrating the monitor

- Whole image on monitor looks a tad post sharpened.

I tried this after hardware calibration (which can only be done under Windows by the way, thanks Dell). As well as Software calibration or any of the profiles available. I tried all options in the menu to no success.

I also installed a fix I found that would force the iMac in outputting RGB instead of the YPbPr it does when connecting this display. Doesn't fix the issues mentioned though.

Dell support is no help. All tehy would do is keep me on the line for half an hour and then tell me to look for OSX drivers on the website (which don't exist for this display). At the end of the day they will have me exchange the display several times until I can eventually send it back.

If there could be any help from Apple on this it would be great, as under Windows the display works flawlessly.

Is there a fix for this issue at all?

Sebastian

Hi

What worked for me was this.

I bought a Thunderbolt/Mini Displayport to Displayport cable v1.2 (4k compatible)

I also used the http://embdev.net/topic/284710 but i'm not sure it was even necessary

in my situation.

I'm on the latest Sierra 10.12.3 so maybe it is fixed now.

But everything looks fine now on my Dell U2723HM and Macbook Pro 15" Retina.

Hope this helps. I was also in the same situation as everybody else with only Full HD

resolution but now i have 2560x1440 and it looks great.

Hi - we're having exactly the same issue with this monitor in our office.

One user has it plugged into a Dell Windows laptop and it works perfectly.

The other users have Retina MacBook Pros and we are suffering the same issue as the OP; both have tried the override hack here http://embdev.net/topic/284710 and it doesn't work. Any other suggestions?

Dell appear to be hopeless in supporting this issue...😠

p.s. we have upgraded our cables to the Apple Dual DVI/MiniDisplayPort (£85!) and it has made no difference 😟

Hi duncan,

I have spent many hours trying to solve this problem. I talked a lot to Apple, Dell and even to people who reviewed the monitor. Eventually I think I had a solution and results, but you will probably not like it:

• The problem does not lie in Mac compatibility, even though it may seem that way at first.

• The problem is within the monitor and how it treats certain colors which the Mac uses in its OS design and Windows does not. This is why you only see the problem so clearly in Mac environment. When testing further you will probably also find it in Windows. The issue is called color ghosting or something like that. It is a phenomenon some people don't seem to mind so much. To me it was very irritating.

• I compared the display to other, more expensive displays and found that in general there are many quality flaws.

In conclusion, after having two different generations of this display as well as about 5 replacements in total, I am convinced the problem is within the poor Dell quality. In terms of service anfd customer support, it is a big hassle and takes a lot of time to go through their restricted system.

My solution: Got rid of everything Dell and will NEVER buy a Dell product again. It's not worth the lower cost when at the end there's always something wrong and inferior with these things. They might work for the masses and with drawbacks, but not in a professional working environment in my oppinion based on this recent catastrophic experience with both the U2713H & HM. In which eventually I lost my warranty and had to sell as used by the way, because the seller was annoyed by my returning and as I'm a company customer there is no return right unless there's a proven flaw, which my display didn't have because this is how it should be according to Dell...

So best solution: Don't even get a Dell product.
