My ipod 4th Gen wont light up or charge

Okay, its my stepsisters and it charged fine in her laptop and she let it run flat out. Now im trying to get it to connect to my laptop but it wont turn on. The cable isnt the origional one it came with, but its been fine for her. I've tried resetting it, leaving it in for 30minutes+. Im stuck on options now, and please if you have any answers please use easy words, im only 13 and I need help.
