Sound keeps cutting out - it appears that one of my two Airport express utilities "dosn't support my Base station" is the solution to buy a new device?

Which Airport Utility are you refering to? Version 5.6.1 will support the older AEX.
It's Airport Express with Airtunes - bought around 2004 - 5; the model number is A1088 if that's any help. When you say Version 5.6.1 - how would I check this? Thanks for replying - I haven't used the community before.
Are you on the OSX on windows platform when you run the Airport Utility? And if OSX what version are you running?
Your particular model of AEX is the same as my oldest Apple router which supports the old 802.11g.
Yes I'm on OSX - version 10.8.2.
