remote connection fail

Remote Connection to Time Capsule from a remote network fails.

I am using the latest firmwaire on Time Capsule ( 4th generation )

Latest update and OS on my macbook pro.

The time capsule is connected to a cable modem, which, in turn, is connected to the internet / cable.

I have a dynamic IP address from the ISP.

Problem:

When outside of my home WiFi network, I can see the Time Capsule in my finder under " shared ". Clicking on it, starts the connection, but results in an error after about 50 seconds, saying that the connection to the Time Capsule failed.

In contrast, I have a mac mini, hard-wire connected directly into the cable modem. when outside of my home network, I see my mac mini in finder and I can connenect to it!

I guess that the problem is that I have a cable modem between the Time Capsule and the internet, which does not allow me to connect to the Time Capsule.

I need very specific/detailed step by step instructions how to fix this problem as I am not so IT savvy.

Many thanks in advance !

I assume you are using BTMM and iCloud?

Did you follow the instructions for setup of the TC?

Although it doesn't say.. I think this works much better if the TC is the router for the network.. but you at least must have it bridged.. you cannot connect with it in router mode.. that will show up as a double NAT issue.

Do you have double NAT.. ??

If so it will block incoming packets.. but you will still have network connections.. this cannot be done without the TC in the correct setup.

The best way to tell is to give me a traceroute to a google DNS server..

So just copy and paste it.

MacProie-5:~ Ray$ traceroute 8.8.8.8

traceroute to 8.8.8.8 (8.8.8.8), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets

You must not have more than one private ip address. In my case 192.168.x.x

If you do have then you must bridge the TC. And even that maybe inadequate.

I can tell you how to do that.. but need to know what OS and airport utility version you are using.

I am having the same issue with my Time Capsule. I just purchased it the the other day set it all up this weekend and now when I try to access it I get the same error. I can access the mini I have on the same network fine but can not access the TC. I also can not log in remotely to it through airport utility. It sees it but can not sign in. I however can get to the TC if I type afp://IPaddressofTC. I am using the TC as my router and do not have a double nat issue. The TC has firmware version 7.6.3 and I'm all up to date with ML and airport utility ver 6.2. I'm wondering if this a bug with the latest firmware/ariport utility combination.

Thank you LaPastenague,

I do have a double NAT issue since I have both a cable router and TC.

I am not that IT savvy so If you could tell me step by step instrucitons how to bridge the TC or what to do in this case I would greatly appreciate that. I can get to my cable router which is a Thomson Router, and can cofigure it, just like the TC.

I have a 4th generation TC with the latest firmware I am also running the latest OS X on my mac mini.

Thank you.

Thats it.. all you need.. you put the TC in bridge.. once in bridge I am not sure if you are going to be able to access to it over BTMM but you can try.. put in the BTMM details as per the Apple doco in my first reply.

Nothing else for you to setup as far as remote access is concerned.

You may / should use SMB names.. short, no spaces pure alphanumeric.. and decide how your wireless will work.. but none of that is related to BTMM.

On the other hand if you want to direct access your TC from internet without using BTMM, then you need to use dyndns client in the main router.. so you can find your IP when remote.. and port forward 548 to your TC.. all of that is done in the main router not the TC.

just google it as there are plenty of posts which cover it.

The part this post missed is using dyndns account to identify your public IP if it is dynamic as most people have.. if you are fortunate enough to have a static public ip just use it.. easy peasy.
