Found the driver needed to be updated. Connected via a USB and selected "Devices and Printers" from the Start menu. Next to the iPod was and message indicating to troubleshoot. Clicking on that I followed prompts to troubleshoot and was shown the driver was out of date. Selected to update and this took care of the problem of nothing happening when connecting to my PC earlier. Hope this helps you too.
If you have iTunes 11 turn on the Sidebar. Go to iTunes>View and click on Show Sidebar. You can also do a Crtl+S to show the sidebar. The sidebar is where Devices appears. and Control+B to show the Menu bar
