Bad performance

My mac is working really bad, I can't even move my mouse without getting the rotating coloured thing. It worked fine until today, when it suddenly freezed and had to turn it off by holding the power button. I turned it back on and it took an hour for it to start, and then I couldn't do anything. Any ideas on what is going on? Or how to fix it?
