Spotlight does NOT work - tried EVERYTHING

Running older Intel Mac Pro... Mountain Lion

Spotlight just stopped working - it returns nothing but webpage suggestions.

  1. There are NO disks added under the Spotlight System Preferences.
  2. Trying to add and then remove only results in the "Privacy List Error The item couldn't be addred because you don't have the appropriate permissions.
  3. I've rebuilt permissions. No go.
  4. I've killed SystemUIServer in Activities Monitor - nada.
  5. I've used the info here on How to Disable (or Enable) Spotlight in Mac OS X Lion which includes the terminal commands for killing Spotlight, restarting again, and forcing reindexing. Nothing. Well almost nothing- I got it to re-index for a bit last night... But when you use Spotlight.... nothing.

I have an ugly suspicion it has to do with perceived ownership of the disks by the OS - anyone care to take me up on this? Here's why:

I you reveal the hidden files you see this:

User uploaded file

When I "Get Info" (Command-I) I see these permissions... the disk first, and then the .Spotlight-V100 folder:

User uploaded file

So why does the .Spotlight-V100 say that everyone has "No Access"? But looking at my Mac Mini these settings seem to be correct.

I tried changing ownership on the everyone to "Read" (which didn't work everytime I tried until I started writing this of course) but it just returns the same Privacy Access error when you try to add the disk to the Spotlight Preferences Privacy list again. I tried changing it to Read & Write... same thing.

Now inside the Spotlight-V100 folder is the VolumeConfiguration.plist file - I'm wondering if something in these preferences (which you can read unless you change the setting to "Read" where it is first set 'everyone' as 'no access') might give a clue - so here is the content of that file and I'll leave this for now to see if anyone has any clue what's going on here. Thanks

Oh... one last clue maybe... I cloned disks at one point to regain the otherwise blocked space on one disk and DID move the start up disk from one disk to another... I have a sneaky suspicion that that might be the culprit - but how could i detect an "ID" of sorts that refs one disk and shows that this one's settings are not that disk that it "thinks" it is?

Feb 14, 2013 9:31 PM in response to A. Timleck

The permissions of those files are correct. Never change the permissions of any file unless you're absolutely sure you know what you're doing.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Step 1

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.

Enter "mdworker" (without the quotes) in the Filter text field. Select the most recent 50 or so messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

If there are long runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.

When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.

Step 2

Do the same with the search string "mds".

Feb 15, 2013 5:42 PM in response to Linc Davis

Hi Linc,

Thanks for picking up my thread and offering your insights.

Going to Console and filtering for mdworker reveals no entries what so ever. I recognize mdworker as one of the key components of Spotlight so suggests it's not running. I also see that Console is posting repeated crashes for for

LaunchServices/5123589

here's the full entry:

2/15/13 8:28:20.942 PM ReportCrash[637]: failed looking up LS service ( scCreateSystemService returned MACH_PORT_NULL, called from SetupCoreApplicationServicesCommunicationPort, so using client-side NULL calls.

this certainly appears also to be Spotlight because running this in Terminal...

sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist

and the crash reports stop. Run this to reload Spotlight...

sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist

and the errors start again.

This is the crash report noted above - pretty sure this is what you want now - I see no mdsworker but mds errors all through...

Thoughts?

Thanks.

So reading through some other posts that you've contributed to Linc...

I have little doubt you'll find the index is corrupt. But then I can't use the re-index method suggested (dragging drives to the Privacy window in Spotlight prefs and then removing them again.). So I first quit the Spotlight server

sudo mdutil -a -i off

then went ahead and deleted the .Spotlight-100 folders on the three partitions. Then I restarted indexing using

sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist

It produced this messages in the Console

2/15/13 9:20:06.777 PM mds[754]: (Error) DiskStore: Unable to create/find index location 285FB7C8-F524-4AF8-AD02-6BA63AB587E4 0

2/15/13 9:20:13.776 PM com.apple.SecurityServer[16]: Session 100005 created

2/15/13 9:20:15.178 PM com.apple.SecurityServer[16]: Session 100012 created

2/15/13 9:23:51.278 PM WindowServer[164]: CoreAnimation: context hosting changed while locked!

which suggests to me it did create new indices after not finding the earlier ones since they were deleted. And now it is re-indexing.

We'll see where this gets us but I got this far before and it did little good. BTW, I also checked for 3rd party plug-ins in the Spotlight folder and nothing that wasn't very recent and intel.

Well this is a happy sight for a change...

No mds isn't crashing. I am checking the console log as it indexes and see some problem files being reported by mdworker. But Spotlight is def. back from the dead.

only an error for quicktime - keeps being repeated constantly

but that one is for "another day"

Thanks for the help and guidance Linc - much, much appreciated.
