No hard drive

Several days ago our iMac started behaving slowly. It eventually took a very long time to start up. Using disk utility I erased the hard drive and tried to install OS 10.4. I got the first CD loaded, but it would not have anything to do with the second CD. The most I would get was a grey screen with the Apple logo and the gear shift spinning. I have already repaired the hard drive. I decided to once again erase the hard drive. I started the computer with the startup drive and went to disk utility. It cannot find disk information. I went to the startup disk option in the menu and it only shows the CD --- no hard drive.

This is getting worse and worse. Any thoughts out there?

If you can't find your hard disk in Disk Utility, then it's a hardware problem (damaged hard drive). Take the computer to an Apple Store or reseller to get a new hard disk.

If you want to do it yourself, you can find the steps in iFixit. In this page, you can follow how-to's to replace your hard drive and you can get the hard drive, but you can also buy it in other pages, as OWC

I do not remember what generation the iMac is. I was afraid it was the hard drive. I will look for the hardware utility CD. I am sure I have it.

Fortunately I have the Time Capsule.

I took it to the local Genius Bar. They did some of their own testing and did not find anything wrong. Since I had erased my hard drive and loaded the first of two OS CDs, they erased my hard drive again and loaded OS 10.6 for me. Seems to be working just fine now. I am currently reloading all of my files from my Time Machine.

thank you for your assistance. It was very helpful.
