Erased hard drive now when installing osx is asking for apple id to reinstall osx but I purchased from someone else

You will need to use the Online Internet Recovery system, Hold down the Command+Option+r keys at startup until you see a Spinning Globe in the center of the screen, and reinstall Lion on your system. Then if you want to can Buy Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store under your own Apple ID and install it.

This happened because all of the downloaded version of OS X, If bought as an Upgrade from a pervious version of OS X, are tied to the Apple ID of the person that bought it. It is not tied to the machine.

The only version of OS X that is tied to the machine is the original version that came Pre-Installed on it when bought New. The seller should of wiped the drive and reinstalled Lion on it before they sold it to you. So yes they lied to you. But more then likely were not aware of this fact.

The only thing that you can do as of now is call Applecare and have them sell you a copy of Lion. This is unfortunately the only way to re-install Lion. They will explain how this procedure is done.

The only downside to this is that you will have to have access to another Mac, to log in with you AppleID to redeem the code that you will receive via e-mail to your AppleID.

I expect they didn't provide you with the Disks that came with the Mac. From what i can gather this Mac was shipped with 10.6, and then the original owner went into upgrading to 10.7 afterwards. If it was shipped with 10.7, it would NOT ask you for an AppleID when you tried to reinstall

Sorry to jump on you again but you are again completely mistaken. If the system came with Lion, or Mt Lion, Pre-Install from Apple when bought New you can use the Online Internet Recovery system to Reinstall the Originally included version of OS X.

Please do some research before posting the Wrong information.

Since it asks him for a verification with Apple to start with, its safe to assume it was not shipped with Lion, and the prior version was SL.

Internet Recovery is to be used when the HDD has been completely replaced, or it has been completely wiped and has no access to the Recovery Partition originally created when 10.7 or 10.8 was installed.

It will have to be lion. The only workaround would be creating an external USB key with Mountain Lion onto it, and boot from there and install it as you would if it were a Recovery HD on it's own.

Unless the Seller install Mt Lion, buying it with His, the sellers, Apple ID, and sold it with Mt Lion, which is what the seller did. Then the internal Recovery HD partition on the internal drive would POINT to Mt Lion and Not Lion.

To get the originally factory installed OS you Must use the Online internet Recovery system. That system will Always reinstall the Originally ship version of OS X.

Please Please do some research before posting incorrect information. It just makes helping people that much harder for those that have the correct information.

Well that may be true but if it was then it is Not a Late 2011 model Macbook Pro. All Late 2011 Macbook Pro notebook shipped with Lion Pre-Installed. Lion came out sometime around June 2011 and the Late model 2011s came out in October of 2011 and as stated above they ALL came with Lion Pre-Installed.

So you more then likely have an Early-Early 2011 model. As some of the Early 2011 models did come with Lion Pre-Installed but that was for those system that were Manufactured After Lion came out.

In that case you will need to contact Apple by phone and order a set of Replacement system discs. There are 2 of them. One to installed the Originally shipped version of OS X, in this case more then likely Snow Leopard, and the other has the iLife Applications on it. You really do need those original system disc to get that system back up and running.

The mac didn't come with disks as it was pre installed software.

What about if I purchased Mountain Lion on another mac would this then download when I chose to reinstall lion from my apple id or would it have to be just Lion?

The Mac currently has 10.7 Recovery/Internet Recovery. 10.6 did NOT come with these options. Nor did machines earlier than 2010.

Since the Machine does NOT have 10.8 at the moment, the only Internet Recovery option he gets is 10.7 which is correct.

Since the original customer had upgraded to 10.7, but he used HIS AppleID to do it. So both Internet Recovery and normal Recover HD reinstallations are not tied to the machine, which would be the case if it was pre-installed, but to the original Customer's AppleID.

What Tippomac will have to do now is either purchase 10.7 from AppleCare, and then install 10.7 as he would normally do, or purchase 10.8 and use the USB installation method I mentioned above.

So you had a MBP that came with Snow Leopard and no system disc and bypassed reinstalling Snow Leopard and went striaght to Lion or Mt Lion without having a way to download either of them and not having a USB thumb drive bought by you with your Apple ID.

Can't happen. Both those OS X version are only available After you install Snow Leopard 10.6.5, or above ( I believe), that has the ability to go to the Mac App Store and buy and download either of those 2 version of OS X.

The OP does Not have, has never purchased, either of those 2 version of OS X and as far as I know does not have another Mac to actrually use to do the buying and downloading of them.

In that case, as I have stated, he will need the original system disc. Then after he has installed the original version of OS X, if it is Snow Leopard, he can then Go To the Mac App Store and buy and download Mt Lion or Contact Apple and purchase Lion and get a Code to download that again from the Mac App Store.

Without a Mac system able to logon to the Mac app store there is No other way to get either Lion or Mt Lion on older Mac hardware.

No I had purchased a Mac, that the original owner had upgraded and he didn't provide me with the installation DVD's.

All I did, since 10.8 wasn't available at the time, i just called AppleCare, purchased Lion, and then went to my nearest Apple Retail Store, and just activated the licence.

Then went back to my mac and entered my AppleID and managed to install it like a boss.

AppleCare might be able to send him a replacement Disk, but I haven't gone down that path since I found it a hassle to wait for the DVD's to get shipped. They gave me an estimate of 2 weeks to get that replacement disk. I just paid 18 euro's and got my issue solved in a matter of minutes.

That is because there was still an Operating System on your Mac.

The OP has Wiped the drive. So there is NO OS at all on it.

Completely different circumstances.

In any event it would be best for anyone in this situation to obtain the Original System Disks. One reason is if you do not have them and for whatever reason you WIPE the drive, or the drive fails, you will not be able to do what you did and you will not be able to re-install the any OS on it or included iLife Apps even IF you are able to get an OS installed.

In both occasions, internet recovery and recovery HD, the OS is downloaded from Apple's Servers once you verify with your AppleID.

So lets think about this scenario. You have a MBP 2011 and your HDD completely fails. It had 10.7 preloaded. You change your HDD. Based on what you say, you are screwed because there is no OS on the Drive, and you don't have the USB Stick that was shipped with RETAIL versions of 10.7

Internet Recovery is there for these circumstances. At this point, the OP has both HD recovery, and Internet recovery, just the default Macintosh HD Partition has been wiped.
