Backup Takes several days!!! Help Please

Hi, I was trying to make a backup from my MacBook Pro with still the old system 10.5.8. Making a Disk Image on an external USB2 harddrive takes ages, it took me 52 hours until I had a power outage, to find a damaged disk image of my harddrive of 754 MB (I threw it away). My harddrive is totally full, from 297.7 GB I have only 1.7GB space. Ideally I would like to have a fully accessible backup, so I can throw away files on my computer and finally update to X Lion, which I want to do for a year but never got around to because deadlines are chasing each other. I have now a Lacie Mac Formatted (journaled) 1 TB harddrive.

What is the best way for me to do this quickly? A good answer with the most practical options available would be highly appreciated.

Thank you in advance

Hello, we should find out why it's so slow first maybe, but...

Get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the New one...

Or SuperDuper...

Or the most expensive one & my favorite, Tri-Backup...

BTW, a Disk Image won't be bootable.

Hi Thank you for your answer,

There is no solution that comes with my mac system? I would prefer not to spend extra money.

Can I access the files independently as well with any or all of these softwares?

I need it as if my external harddrive was another computer.

Also I wonder if the harddrive is OK. It took twenty min. to reformat to mac journaled, but now it takes already 8h hours for 20 Gb. That does not sound like USB 2 sounds like USB to me. The Lacie should be able to do USB 3 even, but my computer doesn't support that yet. What might I be doing wrong?

Thank you

Greetings

Well, Disk Utility should work but not for bootable copy, Terminal can be used to do such though...

Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select Disk Activity tab, copy a folder over to the external, what speeds are we seeing?

Also... Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
