why do photos look fab when first imported and flick to being dull and lifeless after a few seconds

as the question says I'm tired of looking through my newly imported images and being delighted with what i see but a second later the image goes flat and looks so dull

Becuase what you see first is the JPEG preview generated by the camera. I suspect you have it set to "vivid" or the like.

Aperture cannot use the JPEG preview in its rendering so it makes its own rendering, which is what you see after a second or two. It's probaby more accurate than a "vivid" preview, but you can always create an import preset which jacks up the saturation to your liking, if you want.
