When asked to povide an email password (after you set the mailbox up & have been using it), you are told to go to Window. Then choose Connection Doctor. There is no such option under Window. How do you get to the Connection Doctor?

There is here. Reinstall the 10.7.5 COMBO update and see if that fixes things.
I did click on Window, but the options were Minimize, Zoom, & Bring all windows to front. Even the grayed out options didn't include one for Connecttion Doctor. I have a brand new 2013 iMac 27, & it is not like other Macs in many details. The options for the mouse are different, and it doesn't have Connection Doctor.
I've also found that keyboard shortcuts aren't always the same for other Macs, and the wired keyboard differs in its shortcuts from the wireless one.

I just checked again in Mtn Lion, which is what should be on your new machine, and see this in Mail. So, all I can suggest is for you to reinstall the OS. Boot into recovery mode (restart, holding down the CMD+R keys). Alternatively, contact Apple's Express Lane and let them deal with it, since it's a new machine.
Following above directions, I clicked on Window, but there was no option for Connection Doctor, the next step. Where does one find that?
