re configured email to imap but gear is still spinning after 2 days

can re configured my email to IMAP and the gear has been going round for days now. The activity window says it is copying 8552 messages but I know there are not that many there. Help?

I think mail is processing something - looking in the Window>activity pane it shows evaluation is repeatedly happening. i have received new mail in the account today though so maybe it's working something through.
