How to extend iPad 3 battery life

I'm on vacation and find that I start the day at 8:30 am at100% and by 2 pm I'm getting warnings...down to 3%. I check email and read newspapers and books. I didn't have this problem with the iPad 2 last year. What can I do?

iPad (3rd gen) Wi-Fi, iOS 6.1.1, No cellular on this.

While I don't own an IPad 3 yet, I do know a good deal of info on pretty much every aspect involving lithium ion batteries that Apple uses.

First, the IPad 3 is famous for being a complete energy and power hog. It has a battery capacity of approximately

8,500 Mah. This compares to the battery capacity of an IPad 2 which is about 5,200 Mah.

Mah simply stands for what is also called Amp-Hours. So your IPad 3 has 8.5 Amp Hours of capacity at 5 volts and your IPad 2 has about 5.2 Amp Hours at its rated 5 volt power level. They both are supposedly designed to run for about ten hours each on one charge.

This basically never happens. My point here is that ipad3 has a much greater need for more power then IPad 2. Plus as the power needed per hour is so much higher, the lithium batteries or any rechargeable battery for that matter, will suffer what is known as total capacity reduction. This is called Peukarts Law I believe. In other words taking two batteries both with the same actual stated capacity, and by placing a higher load level, or a greater power drain on only one of them ( Battery A ), while placing a lower level of power drain on the second one, (Battery B) this will result in

Battery A's actual total capacity and the amount of energy stored in it originally to drop way below Battery B's total capacity, which with the smaller power drain does not suffer capacity loss. So there is one major factor as to why your IPad 3 is running down too fast. Not too much you can do about that.

Also be careful to keep the state of charge levels on your IPad as high as you can. Deep discharges as well as long overcharges drastically reduce these batteries capacities and life span. Power levels should nominally not drop under 60% if possible. Take it down to 10% even a few times will really start damaging the battery very quickly.

To extend IPad 3 battery life, you have two choices. Either keep double pressing the home button to open up the list of active programs below the bar, and by pressing on any one of the icons and holding it for a few secs, will get it to start wiggling as well as the other ones, you will also see a red X on each one. Tap the red X's to close down all of your background apps, and do this frequently throughout the day. This Is one way. Another way is to buy an External Battery Pack.

You can find many good and reasonable External Battery Packs on Amazon. I will find you a link to one of the ones I bought that are really good. Advantage is that you can plug the IPad 3 into one during the day and recharge and top off the iPads battery that way. Disadvantages are that you have to carry it around with you throughout the day. The ones I like are below, they have high capacity, are very compact, and designed for the IPad 3's.

So some combination of the two methods above should help you. Long post, my apologies.

If those links don't work here are the same products with their names and you can just paste them into Amazons search bar.

PowerGen PGMPP12000 12000mAh External Battery Pack Triple USB Port & 3Amps Output- Black ( this is my favorite )

Anker® Astro3E 10000mAh Dual 5V 3A USB Output External Battery Pack Charger for Smart Phones, Android Phones, PS Vita, GoPro; iPad

I hope that this helps you. If you are vacation Amazon still ships one day to almost anywhere in the world. :-)
