Can you open these files with any other program eg Preview?
Someone else had problems here when the .mp4 came from BluRay or some weird encoding.
Otherwise MPEG Streamclip can often be used - convert to ProRes 422, since this is better for editing.

There seems to be a problem where Final Cut does not accept .mov and .mp4 files.
mov and mp4 are just containers or 'media wrappers' - can contain literally anything, far from standards.
follow furrytoes advice, and give MpegStreamclip a try to convert into something useful .....

yeah it opens up on other programs, just not final cut. and yes we will try that! thank you!
