why is final cut pro rejecting .mov and .mp4 files?

There seems to be a problem where Final Cut does not accept .mov and .mp4 files. We have footage that we need to edit but the person who gave us the footage has the files as .mp4. We really don't know what to do and our deadline for this "project" you can say is tomorrow. And there are about 300 clips that need to be edited. If there are suggestions to converters, that are free, please let us know.

Can you open these files with any other program eg Preview?

Someone else had problems here when the .mp4 came from BluRay or some weird encoding.

Otherwise MPEG Streamclip can often be used - convert to ProRes 422, since this is better for editing.
