My mail no longer displays the red counter for new messages - why?

My Mail icon on home screen used to have a small red counter showing the number of new messages. It has suddenly disappeared, fortunately my new messages have not.

iPad 2, iOS 6.0.1

Did you have Push enabled for Mail? Settings>Mail, contacts, calendars>Fetch New Data>Push>On.

Thanks for the tip. Push is already on. What's weird is after posting my question and not doing anything at all, suddenly the red counter is back. No explanation how it happened. Go figure.
