Shortcut to Trigger a Stack

Hi all, I used to love the CMD+Space shortcut to launch applications but on Mountain Lion, I've had an unresolvable indexing problem which pretty much makes my MBP unusable. So I've disabled spotlight via the terminal and added my apps folder to the dock as a stack. I was wondering if there is a way to activate this stack with a shortcut so I can open apps using just the keyboard? Thanks guys

Turn on the "Move focus to the Dock" command in Keyboard Shortcuts.

To activate the Applications folder, type the shortcut, then start typing "applications" until it highlights. If you've got the App Store in the Dock, it will likely take "appl" to get to Applications. Or, you can use the arrows.

Hit space to activate the Stack, then type the name of the program you want to use. Space will open the selected app.

Or, get Quicksilver.
