as long as it's not defect then a hdmi cable having not active electronics is a series of copper wires connecting 2 connectors
so if you had connectors you could even make your own cable
The Apple TV 3 will require a high speed HDMI cable. The standard cable may work but is technically outside of the requirements for 1080p.

When buying HDMI cables, beware that some will sell cables labeled as HDMI 1.2 compatible, HDMI 1.3 compatible etc., often charging higher prices for higher version. This is all complete nonsense, there are only 2 types of HDMI cable (excepting those with ethernet) standard and high speed.
Winston is right you'll be better off using a high-speed cable. Keep in mind high speed does not mean high cost. A quick search on eBay brings up compatible HDMI cables. In fact, this one explicitly states that it is high speed.
