I am having difficulty updating the software on my ipad. Can anyone help please?

I go to update to version 6.1 and it says that I need to install itunes 11. I click install and it says that itunes has been installed but when I go to update software it says that I need to download itunes 11 again. I've tried it many times with the same thing happening.
