Support for Seagate Barracuda 7200 3 TB 7200RPM SATA 6 Gb/s NCQ 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive ST3000DM001

Hi,

I have an Apple iMac 2011 Model with i5 Processor, 1TB HDD and 8G DRAM which I am using for my Home Music Studio. I am running short of space as I use lot of Samples and VSTs and hence thought of upgrading the HDD to Seagate Barracuda 7200 3 TB 7200RPM SATA 6 Gb/s NCQ 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive ST3000DM001. Kindly confirm if this works with the iMac 2011 Model.

Regards,

Sri

If the computer is still under AppleCare, I'd advise against it. Better to find an external solution.

Built-in drives on those iMacs have specialized firmware which controls the fan speeds. When you replace with a different drive, two things happen: the fans will rev up to full speeds at all times, and the drive will fail the Apple Hardware Test should you ever run that.

The fan issue can be solved with HDD Fan Control:

So the answer is yes, with warnings.
