Video Format

hi, how come i can't open a video file that is formatted as xvid.avi? I thought Apple should be able to support avi files...is this a different avi file? Please help. Thanks!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Hi, thanks for the quick reply. I already have VLC in my applications but i am still getting this error.
