Why won't the sound work on my iPad after I unplug my headphones?

Whenever I unplug my headphones from the jack of my iPad the speakers will not work. I am stuck using my headphones all the time for sound because the speakers won't kick back in once the headphones have been removed (even if I try unplugging and replugging them in multiple times).
