Install OS X Snow Leopard, no disk to select?

Had the flashing question mark and have taken steps to try to rectify: started up in Safe mode and checked permissions etc, checked cables, reset NVRAM.

Now booting off DVD to do another disk repair as now even Safe Mode does not work.

In Disk Utilities the only disk showing apart from the CD drive is a drive called 'Media'. All options to disk repair or erase are greyed out.

If I go to install OS X (Snow Leopard) there is no disk showing to select.

Firstly, what does this mean/suggest?

And, Is there anything else I can do that is not too techie? I have backed-up fully.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6)
