Sync operation with the MacBook Pro (OS 10.7.5) and iPad OS 6.1

I cannot sync my laptop with my iPad. Never had this problem before. It seems to be the Calendar sync where the sync hangs up. I restored my iPad, I uncheked everything, then checked each item to be synched in turn and each time the Calendar step caused the hang up. This makes my iPad less than useful as if I cannot have my calendars, it means I need to have my other devices with me just for the Calendars, which means my MacBook Pro. The sync works just fine with my iPhone. Anyone else had this problem? One other indication I had while synching was that the sunc wheel showed activity on the iPad even when I was not connected with cable or wirelessly. I do not use iCloud as this really messed up my calendars when I first got the iPad so little trust in iCloud for me.
