Q: Upgrading from a G5 iMac running Tiger to a new iMac.

I am upgrading from a G5 iMac running Tiger to a new iMac, can I use 32Gb SD Card to move iphotos, itunes, ivideos? If so, how do I do it and insure I keep slideshows, playlists etc. I have built in iphoto, itunes etc.

    Hi, the best way would be a TB->Firewire cable on the new one, with the G5 in Target Mode, then use Migration Assistant to pull everything over.

     

    But... How Much Space is used on the G5's Drive now?

    Less than 100 Gb including programs.

    I was trying to avoid buying a TB to Firewire800 adaptor and a Firewire800 to 400 cable - which I would use only once, when I have a 32 Gb SD card already.

    Do you have a USB Drive of more than 100 GB available? You'll need one for backups anyway.

    I am buying an external USB3 hard drive recommended by Apple for back-ups. Of course my G5 iMac only has USB1 so the hard drive won't connect. Only back-ups I currently have are DVD's onto which I have burnt most important data.

    The USB drive I have is about 5 Gb so only of use for data, that is why I was hoping to use the 32 Gb SD card, my iPhoto library is approx 10 Gb and iTunes approx 12 Gb so I was hoping to use the SD card to move them over one by one.

    One of my concerns is that Apple support were not too sure it was a good idea to try and connect my old G5 iMac to a new one. I think the T/Bolt to Firewire800 to Firewire400 connection worried them.

    I still think the best in your situation is Target mode, but you can do it piecmeal with much more work using your 32 GB.

    He would need the migration assistant on Snow Leopard to be compatible with Mountain Lion. Reference.

    Your Tiger iPhoto library may need upgrading with a Apple Library updater tool before you can use it with iPhoto '11. Reference. More iPhoto help just in case.

     

    Make sure that that SD card is an SDHC card, and not just an SD card, or it may not be readable in your new iMac.

     

    Here is the layout of the iTunes 11.0.1 Music folder on OS X 10.8.2. It may vary from what you have on Tiger.

    Read the following articles before you move your iTunes library from Tiger.

    When you are satisfied that your iTunes content is moved over to Mountain Lion, you may wish to deauthorize the G5 from iTunes.
