Upgrade Installation Problems

The latest version of iTunes for Windows (XP) wouldn't download. Went through all the steps on the support page. Uninstalled/reinstalled iTunes. Now I get a message it couldn't read my library because it was created with a "newer" version of iTunes. iTunes won't even open now
