Mid 2010 Macbook Pro 15" Random Restarts

My Mid 2010 Macbook Pro 15" restarts randomly, this has been happening for quite a while now, but more so recently than ever before.

I don't think I"m losing any data, but it's a bother when I'm trying ot study or do anything productive for that matter.

There are times when it works like a charm for extended periods of time, but if it means anything, it seems to happen more when I move it, although it is not exclusive to that.

I use a plug in keyboard and mouse, and I have my laptop on a stand, so I don't belive it's a hardware issue, although I might be mistaken.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities

You have a Mid 2010 15-inch MacBook Pro and your log shows a problem with the NVIDIA graphic card.

There's a common problem with those MacBooks Pro because the NVIDIA graphic card is defective, and it causes black screens, kernel panics, unexpected reboots... Fortunately for you, Apple is repairing those Macs (including yours) for free > http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088

Before taking the computer to an Apple Store or reseller to get your Mac repaired, make a backup of your data with Time Machine and/or Carbon Copy Cloner. Apple shouldn't do anything with the hard drive, but just in case they do, make a backup. The whole logic board must be replaced, so the repair may take some days

I have an appointment set up to see if they will fix mine. Hopefully it is a "recall" level repair as my MBP is out of warranty.

I previously thought my issue was a SSD I put in the computer followed by a 500GB drive retrofit into the SuperDrive bay.

After much troubleshooting I put the original drives (500GB and SuperDrive) back into the MBP, reinstalled OS X, and installed one app that I found caused a Kernel Panic (KP) without fail (Hallmark Card Studio [HMCS])*

As soon as I ran the app I got a KP. So while the computer still has an issue am glad that it is not the SSD (because I want to put that speed demon back in once the video card is fixed).

Other curiosities was when the computer would KP: I played BOTH Portal games over the Winter Solstice holiday season and neither one KPd the Mac once. But fiddling around in iPhoto, Pixelmator, and other graphics intensive apps would. Strange.

I will report back with what Apple does (the appointment is March 5th, 2013).

-Murph

*My father and bride both have Mountain Lion (like me) running on their Macs (iMac and Air respectively) and can run HMCS with no KP issues.

Mar 3, 2013 9:03 PM in response to gusf

@gusf you explicitly have to ask them to perform the "TS4088" test. I had the same problem months ago, and they couldn't reproduce it with their normal tests. But when I told them about TS4088, they looked in their genius "tier two guide" and saw a special TS4088 test that they ran. It flashed red within a minute, and they covered the repairs.

May 2, 2013 8:38 PM in response to biznak

Yes. Just set up an appointment. It's a manufacturing defect so it is an Apple issue. Ask them to run that "deep scan" the "TS4088" test mentioned above. When they did mine a big red FAIL filled the screen during the test. It's like a $700-$800 repair if you had to pay for it youself, so buy a gadget for your iphone to celebrate your savings while you are at the Apple Store 🙂.

May 12, 2013 7:33 AM in response to biznak

I was so happy to see that "FAIL" screen as well. The problem had started, coincidentally, when I moved my original Hard drive to the Optical Bay and put a 256 SSD in the original HHD spot. I figured that was the problem. So I swapped everything back to original configuration and the reboots kept happening.

So glad that Apple can be such an easy company to work with. I have never had a problem with their Customer Service or Tech Support.

Comcast and Centurylink...that's another story.

So glad that it worked out for you as well. Let's hope others with the issue find this thread and stay Mac instead of throwing that MBP asside and getting a $279.97 PC from Walmart.

Oct 9, 2013 5:17 AM in response to ImaCheeseball

Greetings from Greece...

I have had the exact same issue. I sent my MBP (6.2 mid 2010 15'inch) to the official reseller of apple today here in Greece (golden-i) and after an hour the technician told me that the official apple diagnostics application that they used failed, reporting a GPU problem! He said he will contact apple today and get back to me.

In case apple refuses the replacement what is my next option? My problem (Symptoms and Error Reports) are identical to these you have here, which resulted in defective machines that in the end got replaced by apple.

Thanks in advance.

Oct 30, 2013 10:35 AM in response to Limingxi

From what I understand, they will only replace for free if it is a MID 2010 MBP and if it is less than 3 years from the date of purchase. They will run the TS4088 test and see if it fails. I bought mine refurbished so I fell into that catagory. Show them this thread and this link http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088

My macbook was out of warranty as well, and they still replaced the logic board all free of charge.

Nov 5, 2013 4:41 AM in response to ImaCheeseball

As soon this issue problems to you, call Apple directly asap to avoid the 3 years time limit of warranty. I got mine in August 2010, so definetely it fell into out of warranty category.

Mine is just recently resolved. Really grateful for the great Apple team at Chadstone Mall, Melbourne, Australia!

Here are some summary and the invoice that I should have been paying if they do not kindly offer me free replacements of the motherboard.

Yes, IT IS FREE = $ 0.00 !!!

Do not go anywhere, stay Apple.

Thanks for the useful informations mentioned early on this thread.
