Earpods controls do not work with iPhone 3gs.

I just bought two sets of earpods to use with my iPhone 3gs. However the volume and playback controls do not function. I did a restart of the iPhone, but that did not solve the problem. What must I do to make the controls work on my iPhone 3gs?

iPhone 3GS (8GB), iOS 4.3.3

Earphones with controls have four contact bands on the plug - the plug must be pushed in all the way for them to work - try removing the phone case if you have one and try again - if they still don't work and you have tested them with other phones then I would suggest that you get the phone tested also
