Won't boot, gray screen, spinning gear

Power ran out on MacBook, turned off. Plugged it in, let it charge for a while and tried to start it. Get gray screen with apple and a spinning gear for 1/2 hr now. Any suggestions?

You didn't say which operating system version you are using. If OS X 10.6 or earlier, see this Apple note. If OS X 10.7 or later, see thisApple note. The OS X 106 note is more informative on steps to take.

I stopped upgrading before Snow Leopard because of comparability issues so I am running the previous OS. I believe it is 10.6.something. I can't check of course. I tried the safe boot and PRAM reset with no,luck. I am traveling so I don't have my discs to try that method. I was having no problems except for a bad charger connection prior to this. The laptop is 3 yrs old. I hit the Genius Bar when I get home. Thanks for the info.
