Uncoverthenet is not a question of having installed something.

The response about drag it to the trash tells me this is a new issue for the Mac.

Uncoverthenet is malware. It's been a problem on PCs for at least a couple of years based on what I read on the internet. It is a re-direct from browsers. There are many solutions offered with regard to PCs but this was the first mention I found about Mac.

So the question remains, how to get rid of uncoverthenet?

Many thanks,

Christopher B

There are various and sundry adware extensions that unwitting users can install in Safari or other browsers. Check Safari Preferences > Extensions for the presence of anything you do not want.

Reset Safari: Safari menu > Reset Safari... and check the box "Remove all website data".

Equivalent actions exist for Firefox or other browsers you may use.

How do you know that you have got it?

Thanks for your responses so far.

To Stevejobsfan:

I understand that Windows malware cannot contaminate a Mac . . . although that's an assumption we may have to re-think at some point in the future. What I'm suggesting at the moment is that the uncoverthenet malware may now exist in a Mac version. It seemed to affect the person who started this net and it's now affecting me.

To John Galt:

I will doublecheck the affected browsers at my office later today. I say "doublecheck" because I have already eliminated all the extensions for Safari and Firefox and still the problem occurs. After eliminating the extensions, none of them uncoverthenet, Firefox said that it has rejected a Google redirect, which Safari did not or could not. I will definitely reset all the browsers again as soon as I get to my office computers. Thanks for the tip.

I guess part of the question I'm posing is this: has anyone else encountered a similar problem?

Oh, and a third reply from Klaus just arrived with the question, how do I know I've got the problem? Excellent question. The answer is that I'm guessing because I have not been able to eliminate the problem by removing my browser extensions and because uncoverthenet had become such a huge problem for PCs. I began thinking that maybe malware was the problem. So you're correct with your question in that perhaps I jumped to the wrong conclusion.

I will definitely reset all my browsers on the problem computer as soon as I reach my office. I'll let the forum know what happens.

Thanks to all,

Christopher B

It looks like uncoverthenet is a common PC toolbar, which users are tricked into installing, after which their search engine gets changed and ads are displayed. It's just crappy adware, not actually malware, from the sounds of it.

Such things are increasingly starting to affect the Mac. Fortunately, MadMacs0 beat me to the punch at a solution with the link he posted. Try that, and see if you find that it solves your problem. If it does, let us know what you found and removed. If it doesn't, let us know.
