Why has "iOS 6" taken over my iPhone?

What has happened to my iPhone? I just wanted to download a "tone" loud enough for me to hear. It's downloaded, in my "tones" and plays beautifully but it won"t load to my ringtone and I was told that I had to have iTunes on my phone to make it work. I loaded iTunes and now my opening window shwos "iOS 6" on a black page. When I open it it tells me that my iPhone was updated succesfully and I have "...a few more steps to follow and 'then you're done'....". When I hit continue it takes me to "choose a network" which shows my network (ATT) which is now locked because I have tried to enter my password so many times and they have refused to accept it. All I wanted was a ring tone..waaaaaaaa.😢

It refuses to let me enter my Home Window When I try they bring up a window with "Emergency Call" ONLY!!! Now they won't even do that.

Thanks Lawrence! This page had a tremendous amount of information which I have utilized and saved. It lead to the possible solution but I'll have to wait till tomorrow to find out if it did. I'll give you the first prize if so but thank you for the wealth of information you have already given me.

Cheers and "May the force be with you" (to coin a phrase, lol)

When I downloaded a FREE ringtone Apple entered the tone in my iTunes Library then required (requested ?) that I update to iOS 6 iTunes. When they connected me to OS6 they locked me out of my phone and sent me to ATT for re-whatever it is they "re-". How is it that iTunes can lock my phone? I'm on a family plan with my son (who is out of town for the weekend and I can't reach him, my phone is locked, 😟 ) and it seems he must provide a PW to "re-activate" my phone (they won't accept mine. Is there any other solution? It's hard being without a phone for four days. (Monday's a holiday)

This group moves so fast, (22 -50item- pages to get to yesterday's posts and you have go one page at a time, scheesh!) I guess the only way to get someone's attention is to re-post occasionally. Sorry if I'm being a bore.

Thanks in advance for any more help. .....goldie

Lawrence: If you check in I'll give you credit for solving this. After much running back and forth with ATT and Apple Care, one of Apple's Techs (Chanel) figured out what the problem was. It was necessary for me to re-install my iPhone. However, ATT doesn't make clear which "PW" they want and I was trying to enter my WAP PW when they wanted my ATT "KEY" PW. (They also have another numeric PW for some other purpose. These password mixups would drive a saint balmy.)

Anyhow, thanks so much for your lead, Apple isn't the easiest place at which to find information either, a knowledgable person is always appreciated.. ......goldie

Hi, Goldie,

What a mixup! Yes, you can put a passcode on your SIM. If you forget it you need a Pin Unlock Key (PUK) which you have to get from AT&T. Then there's your AT&T online account management passcode. And the passcode just to use your phone if you have it enabled (and you should).

It sounds like you were trying to get ringtones from AT&T. If so, let me suggest getting them from the iTunes Store instead; there's a larger selection, and you can even make your own from any iTunes songs you have.
