I have renamed my time capsule which i was using as an external hard drive, and now I cannot find any of my data on it. Have I somehow erased it or can I find my files somewhere?

Firstly, do you actually have a Time Capsule, or is it an external HDD? A Time Capsule connects to a network.
Renaming the drive shouldn't have caused a problem, if you did it correctly. How did you rename the drive?
I have a 2tb apple time capsule. I was dragging data onto it and could access it through finder untill I renamed it. I renamed it through airport utility. It is still saying I have the same amount of free space on the disk I just can't find the data.
Turn on the guest account so you have full access. You cannot delete the data by renaming the drive.
Are you sure you didn't copy the data inside a TM sparsebundle.. that will certainly not be visible unless you open it.
