How can I delete holidays from my calendar?

The calendar "on my Mac" shows hundreds of entries for US holidays. For the upcoming Presidents' Day there are 147 entries. Likewise when I look back or forward the entries for each of the holidays in this category there are some as high as 157 entries. This results in as many notices of these impending events. When I tried to delete either the entries one at a time or the entire category the calendar does not react and goes into "not responding". Is there a way to delete this entire holiday category?

If you are using 10.7 or above then open Calendar - click Calendars in the upper left and uncheck the holidays.

This will not delete the entries but just stops them from showing. Is there a way to completely delete them from existing at all??

If you right+click on the calendar you should get an option to delete it.

Yes, I have done this but when I do I get as described above the not responding result. As I explained whether I try to delete each individual item or a number of items or the complete calendar all I get is a not responding error then the usual report to HQ as well.

Hold Control key down and click on the Holidays calendar. There will be an option to delete. It deleted the iCal calendar as well as the calendar on my iPhone, which was my goal.
