Why do I lose airplay when I use ethernet to connect both my Apple TV and yamaha receiver?

My receiver is hard wired and also has the airplay function built in. It is a Yamaha RX-V673.I have a Linksys wrt54g for wifi and all of my components for the home entertainment are connected via ethernet cables into a Linksys 5 port switch. Apple TV works flawlessly over wifi as does all of the functionality of the yamaha receiver and airplay.

The issue starts the moment I hard wire the Apple TV to the switch. Once this happens I lose all airplay capability on all devices. Is this a setting on the router that must be adjusted?

Are your wifi and ethernet simply bridging the same network or are they creating there own networks, check the IP addresses of each device.

It appears to me that they are staying within the same network of 192.168.1.1xx

I've updated the firmware on the Yamaha. I seem to remember seeing a 168.x.x.x ip on the Apple TV last time it was connected through ethernet. The strange part is that it won't even hold an ethernet connection long enough for me to check it now. I keeps bouncing back to wifi. Even with it connected to wifi I can use Apple TV and airplay from my ipad to the TV but as long as the ethernet cable is plugged into the switches port I can't connect to the receiver via airplay. As soon as I unplug it I the receiver will appear as an airplay device.

I think I just saw the problem. Ending IP address is .114 which the iPhone is taking.

A 169.x.x.x addrtess indicates it isn't connecting to the network (could it have been 169 rather than 168).

Never mind my previous post. Brain fart. It may have been 169. I can't get it to connect long enough to reproduce it.

Have you tried restarting the router or using different cables.

One thing of note is that if you plug an ethernet cable into the Apple TV it should switch wifi off (even if ethernet isn't working), I can't be certain but something you said implied this might not be happening.

That cable was a little finicky so I replaced it and have a solid connection outside of my network to the 169 ip.

169 is a self assigned address from the device itself, it only does this when it can't connect to a network. It appears the router is unable to give it a proper address.

Exactly. So as per my original question, is anybody aware of a specific router configuration? Router issue? Both the router and the switch are several year old devices.

Not really, it appears to be giving your receiver a connection, I'd look at the cable, the connectors and the ports being used.

I've tried different cables and alternative ports on the switch that work 100% with ps3, Xbox, and the comcast pvr.

It's possible the fault lies with the port on the Apple TV, you did say it reverts to wifi after a short while which definately shouldn't be happening.

I think that was the monkey plugging it in. I'm starting to suspect that the switch is bad. I'm still showing activity lights for port 5 on the switch with nothing plugged in. I think I'll buy a new switch that also doubles as a wifi access point to extend my wifi range. If nothing else at least I get that upgrade checked off the list.
