How do I chat with Iphone users?
Can I use I chat to chat with my friends that have Iphones using Ichat or do I need to download Facetime which is what most Iphone users use?

The artice shldr linked to doesn't specifically mention it (since it's a little older), but iChat under 10.7 and earlier can't communicate with iPhones. In 10.8 it was renamed Messages and has the ability to chat (txt) via the iMessage system with iOS devices.
Facetime is only for video chat.

but how does one go about doing that? OS X doesn't have iMessenger, it only has iChat. is it available through the app store?

You can send an iMessage to anyone who as an iPhone via messages in 10.8

I know I can do it from the ipad, and from my iphone, but can I do it from my iMac?

How long does it typically take to download Mountain Lion?
It depends on the speed of your Internet connection. The full Mountain Lion installer is about 4.5 gigabytes, so you can do the math from there based on the sort of download speeds you normally achieve.
