Why can't time machine backup setup let user decide how often to backup?

Every hour is ridiculous for my purposes and slows my computer when I want to use it, as well as filling up my backup disk too quickly. I want to backup ONCE a day, at night. Is my only option to buy someone elses software to control backups?!

If it is doing what you say, you need to figure out what it is that it is backing up so much, or repair the backup as something is wrong.

If you are backing up databases, like Entourage or Outlook email files, then every little change to the database causes the entire database to be backed up. That would take a lot of time and eat up space rather quickly.
